ANI DIFRANCO - BMHOF CLASS OF 1996

Ani DiFranco, the firebrand singer-songwriter with a powerful voice and unwavering independence, has carved a unique path in the music industry. Born Angela Maria DiFranco in Buffalo in 1970, she grasped music early, taking the stage at nine with a set of Beatles covers. While ballet offered a temporary detour, DiFranco always gravitated back to the guitar, composing her own songs by her teens. By 15, she was already a fixture in the Buffalo folk scene.

DiFranco's independent spirit manifested young. In 1989, at the age of 19, she defied the traditional music industry by founding her own record label, Righteous Babe Records. This move ensured complete creative control, a cornerstone of her career. Shortly after, she released her self-titled debut album in 1990, following her relocation to New York City.

DiFranco's prolificacy is undeniable. Over two decades, her sound has evolved from its folk-rock roots to encompass alternative rock, punk, funk, hip hop, and even jazz influences. Collaborations throughout her career have been equally diverse, ranging from folk legend Utah Phillips to R&B saxophonist Maceo Parker and even Prince.

But DiFranco's impact goes beyond genre-bending music. Her lyrics, both poetic and unflinching, delve into personal experiences while tackling social and political issues. A vocal feminist, she's become an inspiration for countless women pursuing careers in music and business. Her activism isn't limited to lyrics. DiFranco has participated in the March for Women's Rights and her record label's foundation champions the LGBTQ+ community.

DiFranco's achievements haven't gone unnoticed. She's a Grammy Award winner and the recipient of the prestigious Woody Guthrie Award. More importantly, she's earned the respect and admiration of fans worldwide for her unwavering commitment to artistic freedom, social justice, and the power of her own voice.

In 2010, DiFranco's record label released the original Hadestown studio album. She played the part of Persephone, which helped shape the character as the musical evolved. In February 2024, DiFranco finally took the stage, making her Broadway debut in that same role.
