The Business of Music workshops are intended for students interested in starting a band, becoming a songwriter, or expanding their opportunities as a cover artist. Sessions are designed to be flexible and adapt to various settings, including community centers and schools. This program can be modified to cover other professional careers. A significant benefit of the educational process is that it is designed to bring together people of different music, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. There are regional towns and communities with little or no contact with people of color, and our intent is to change this. Additionally, young people are often unaware of the opportunities available in the music field. This workshop seeks to engage new young artists and supporters of music through education and awareness.
There are young artists starting bands every day. There are young writers creating songs, who may never intend to become part of a band, and there are musicians and singers who may only be interested in cover songs and how to re-make or re-record them. There are also young people who may one day become music lawyers. This workshop gives them grounding from which to begin their pursuit.
Our objective is to enlighten young artists about the business side and performance side of the music industry. It is also intended to take the mystery out of getting started, and to answer questions that should be asked, as well as to help them understand the monetary value and opportunities for their time, knowledge and effort. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for established musicians to interact with audiences who may not otherwise have opportunities to meet and mingle with these professionals.
Some of the topics addressed include:
➢ Copyrighting your songs
➢ Publishing your songs
➢ Weekend band versus career entertainers-- Long and short-term planning
➢ Preparing yourself for doing business with venues
➢ Marketing and promotions of your band and or products
➢ The Internet➢ Self-distribution
Series 101 can be time adjusted for schools, community centers, and recreational centers.
This is the primary workshop that is offered.
Let’s bring our communities together through music. This project will be led by Buffalo Music Hall of Famers inductees Van Taylor, Class of 1998; Ronald Walker, and Michael Pennick Class of 2011from the group the Exoutic, Melissa Kate Miller education committee and Buffalo Music Hall
of Fame Advisory board member, Tim Webb Professional Drummer and Road Manager.
